Violence Against Women and Girls in Scotland
Gender inequality is the cause and consequence of violence against women and girls (VAWG). This means that to eliminate violence experienced by women and girls in Scotland, we need to look to and tackle deep-rooted gender inequality, across all levels of society. The impact of gender inequality can be even more consequential for those with intersecting inequalities, such as disability, age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, gender identity and immigration status.
It’s an alarming truth that VAWG is widespread in Scotland. It has detrimental consequences on victims’ lives, their families and communities.

Why is workforce learning and development so important?
Your organisation, your staff and your service users are highly likely to encounter situations where they may be required to recognise or respond to violence against women and girls (VAWG) - within the staff team or within the communities you serve and support. When equipped and prepared, teams will be able to recognise the signs, respond safely and know how to support those affected ensuring everyone’s wellbeing and safety.
Failure to establish policies and procedures, and respond in accordance to best practice can exacerbate distress, trauma and put women and children at even greater risk. It is crucial for organisations to be proactive, prepared and informed when it comes to gender and violence against women, in order to reduce risk and harm, and play their part in tackling gender inequality in Scotland.
